Recently, Independence High School (IHS) has excitedly introduced one of its newest clubs, Interact, which is dedicated to giving back to the community through service-based projects. Since its first meeting in October, Interact has made great progress and anticipates many exciting projects in the future.
For its first event, IHS Interact joined Challenger Middle School’s Interact club for its annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 20. Both Interact clubs successfully worked together to serve nearly 1,000 people who came in for a Thanksgiving meal.
After the Community Thanksgiving Dinner’s tremendous success, Independence High School chose to help again with Challenger Middle School’s Winter Festival. IHS Interact members were more than happy to help with face painting, run the games, and collect donations going towards eradicating polio in third-world countries.
Interact is determined to accomplish various projects in the upcoming year that will serve different aspects of the community. Over the next six months, Interact plans on working with other organizations, such as Feed My Starving Children and Special Olympics, which are dedicated to assisting poverty-stricken and disabled children, respectively.
Established in 1962, Interact is a Rotary Club-sponsored organization that strives to serve others through projects. These projects ranges from volunteering at community food banks to fundraising in order to help those in third-world countries. At Independence, Interact aspires to not only carry out local projects, but also to have an international impact.
Aginess Doka, president of Interact, hopes to deviate from doing standard volunteer projects and emphasizes, “We could do something for not just our community, but other communities [as well].”
Doka goes on to express her passion for Interact and encourages students from all over campus to join.
She assures, “Even if your friends aren’t in the club, you’ll have fun. You’ll enjoy whatever we’re doing. Just do it. Just go. Just have fun.”
Students can join Interact every other Wednesday at 2:45 P.M. in Room B15.
