Nestled within the bustling halls of Independence High School lies the reason for all school events, the Student Council. This club drives the pulse of school life, orchestrating events and igniting school spirit.
The Student Council is an organization led by students that has been a longstanding part of the school. Pepper Marshall, Student Council sponsor, has served as the sponsor for the Student Council for nine years. Marshall states, “The previous advisor asked me to co-advise and then left the school.” She understood that the Student Council laid the groundwork for the school’s culture and made efforts to “improve Independence”.
This club performs a range of duties, from coordinating and executing events to providing assistance at sporting activities. According to Sophomore Mia Gradillas, a member of the Student Council, “Student Council hosts all the major events here on campus and increases school spirit.” Within the club, there exist various committees, each with members responsible for completing their assigned tasks and adhering to the guidance of their committee chair.
Homecoming was one of the many events that was possible due to the Student Council’s hard work and dedication. As stated by Freshman Mayrel Flores Mora, “We had to come in really early on a Saturday to decorate the cafeteria…it was honestly a really fun and great experience to have.” The joy experienced during Homecoming was crafted through the unwavering hard work of the Student Council.
Membership in this club is selective and requires individuals who can truly resonate with its values and goals. Student Council members are expected to have, “leadership, communication skills, and being able to give and receive feedback.” Mora claims. Newer members are encouraged to be involved and spirited because it makes their time in the club all the more memorable.
The Independence Student Council is full of energetic, imaginative, and driven individuals who are committed to enhancing our school campus. They have a deep enthusiasm for showing school spirit and are dedicated to ensuring that everyone has the best high school experience possible. They’re the heroes behind the scenes, making sure everything runs smoothly.
