The French Club is a club sponsored by Nathalie Vaugelade, the French teacher at Independence High School. The club was founded in 1999, with the intent of teaching students French culture. The club currently consists of 2 members, freshman Ava Preston and Jacob Morales.
According to Vaugelade, the club “does not focus on French speaking,” but is more about cooking French specialties after school, in the culinary room. The French Club has partaken in many activities, but cooking is the most common activity within the club. Students who have taken or are currently taking French classes, are invited to club meetings but guests are also welcome.
One of the members, Ava Preston, says that they joined the club because they’re “good friends with Vaugelade,” so being a participant in the club has always been fun. It is her first year participating and already recommends this club to other students because they will have a fun time too. Preston had mentioned, “Something that I love about the French Club is being able to learn new things about France, but also sharing that experience with my friends and being able to have fun at the same time.”
Due to many interferences such as COVID-19 and Cross Country, the French Club has been inactive for a while. However, Vaugelade plans to “re-start” the club, and her main motivation in doing so is to “reconnect with students” especially those that have completed their two years of French.
Their next meeting will be held in early November, which will be another cooking activity after school. Many first and second year students will be participating.
