Chemistry Club is a club at IHS founded by Karyn Kleissle, Chemistry teacher, to encourage students to pursue their scientific interests and gain basic knowledge of the chemistry processes.
Kleissle explained, “We meet once a month to participate in experiments that have been chosen by club members”. The club started back in the “2018-2019” school year. She explained that “Chemistry students in my class a few years ago asked if they could start a club. ” Kleissle has always had a passion for chemistry and explained, “My father also has a background in chemistry and physics. He helps me a lot with experiments” So with that, the club started.
The club itself is a safe place for anyone interested, as safety precautions are met. According to Senior Javier Botello, “Shorts and jeans with holes are not allowed and safety goggles must be worn. We are also taught how to use the safety shower and how to clean and dispose of materials properly.” This is to properly ensure no harm is done to any member.
Experiments in the club are usually held in pairs. When choosing experiments, Kleissle notes that “The students choose an experiment and we determine if the materials are available or we need to purchase them.” Mariana Miranda, Vice President of the club, also adds “One week before the meeting, the officers of the club meet up with the teacher to test the experiment to make sure it works and that it is fun.”
The club is able to distinguish itself apart from the class as it has less constraints. Kleissle stated, “We get to do experiments that the class does not, due to cost and safety reasons.”
Miranda added to that by stating, “In a chemistry class, everything is for a grade, so whenever one messes up an experiment, panic and anxiety immediately overwhelm the body and soul.” To perform these experiments, it is necessary to understand some ground rules.
Kleissle believes the club is useful “To expand their knowledge and experience with Chemistry and how chemistry affects their lives.” A lot of the benefits gained from chemistry clubs cannot be gained from other clubs. Miranda stated that “the club allows students to learn in a fun way and be shocked/amazed at the reactions that can occur.” The club builds a very engaging environment while allowing students to learn.
The club is rated highly among members, and they believe there is a place for everyone. Botello stated “Ms. Kleissle provides a fun opportunity for community building while working on tasks such as experiments, decorations, and community service activities that better the school environment.” Botello also adds that the club provides the opportunity to “meet others who also enjoy the same interest”.
Kleissle cannot manage the club all on her own, as that would be too large of a task. That is why she assigns key roles to members of the club. Miranda states “Those key members include the President, Vice President, the Secretary, and the Treasurer. We all come together, plan and test out the experiment in order to have it completed for the next meeting.” They, along with Kleissle, are what make the chemistry club a functional club for all to enjoy.
