Independence High School NJROTC has an extraordinary program that teaches students discipline, life skills, and how to be professional. Tremayne Tuck, Independence High School NJROTC Commander, said, “ Students learn how to be confident, how to be more outgoing, and it also helps develop leadership skills.”
Most students find it to be exciting and enjoy being a part of the class. Some students who were “Voluntold” ended up finding it very useful in life and think it has helped them accomplish a lot of things. Tuck said, “ One of my favorite things about teaching this class is seeing how students who have already graduated come back and tell me how it helped them be better in the military, or even getting a different job.”
On Wednesdays, students who are a part of NJROTC must wear their uniform. The reason for this is “to show pride, discipline, and to show respect to the country and community.” Freshman Lilyanna Martinez said, “I think NJROTC helped me a lot with time management, it helped me create a routine for myself.” Students say that the uniform has helped them become more organized, responsible, and are able to have better time management.
NJROTC also has events. For example, they have home town parades, color guard, and they have even gone out to NFL Football games. They also are around on future freshman nights.
On Mondays, they do physical training and learn about nutrition. Freshman Lilyanna Martinez said, “The workouts are not hard. They are just simple things like push ups, situps, and crunches.” On Fridays, they go outside and do fun activities, like soccer or football.
NJROTC is a great way to meet new people and explore different opportunities. Being in NJROTC does not always mean you will go into the military, but if you do it could help you a lot. Tuck added, “I like to encourage other students to try it and to not let other people discourage them.”
If any students would like to look more into NJROTC or are interested in joining, they just need to speak to their counselor!
