Many things happen after school at any school, but specifically Independence High School hosts many activities. For example, clubs meet, teachers stay late to help students, the Pace Lab offers help, and students who visit the Media Center. This means there is a variety of activities that help make high school fun or ways to get help with school work.
Amy Elliott, an English teacher, often stays available for students who need help. She also is there to sit and talk. Elliott states, “I have kids that come in for help, and I have students come in to just talk”. Since the beginning of the school year, Elliott has always had her door open after school for students, unless she has meetings of course.
Depending on the teacher’s time, they are always open to helping students who struggle with work or even need to talk about life. Elliott explained how the latest she stayed for a student, “ 6:00 o’clock, during research week to help students turn in their research papers”. This was special help for kids who needed to urgently turn them in as part of their graduation requirements.
Vanessa Hernandez, a Freshman, often goes to the media center to get work done. This consists of doing any missing work and also work assigned that same day. Hernandez states, “I learned that I need to turn work in, so I invest my time in there”. The Media Center is always open for students and has a positive impact as well. For example, Cristal Diaz, a Senior, states how much her grades have “improved” which the reason is “seeking help” on her assignments.
Moreover, IHS is always booming with after school activities like sport games or just to get work done. Izabella Martinez, a Junior, often spends time during lunch at the media center to worry about her homework, “I dedicate time after school for work or time to rest.” Students have different routines or circumstances which students make time to use the school’s resources.
