One of the biggest clubs at Independence is the DECA Club. DECA club is a club designed to teach and give students experiences with working in business and marketing.
Students take on events and experiences as little as helping to clean up the environment, to as big as attending events at State Farm Stadium.
“My favorite part of DECA is the family aspect. I like how no matter who is in DECA, we always depend on each other and we can go to each other for help,” DECA officer Samantha Soto-Avalos ‘25 explained.
DECA advisor, Mr. Daugherty, has enjoyed his first year and explains his gratitude towards his DECA officers who have kicked off a good start to this year.
“I came into this program with a completely blank slate. I only had Sam as a returning member, so we had to work pretty hard to find a good amount of members that we thought could carry the torch of being extra officers. I think we’ve done a pretty good job, so I’d say my officer team this year has really picked up the pace this year”, said Daugherty.
DECA has officers who maintain its publicity and in gaining the attention of those interested.
“This is actually my first year in DECA. I’ve heard before that DECA wasn’t as popular as it is now. I think that’s because of stuff like before I’d never heard of DECA, and I’ve never seen posts of DECA. My main focus is marketing DECA and to get more out there”, explained DECA officer Miguel Reynoso Vera ‘26.
This year’s DECA club aims to create a powerful and friendly community of future business and marketing professionals.
“In DECA we’re all about giving everybody job skills in order to pursue retail, business owning, and all kinds of entrepreneurship and try to develop those soft skills to gain good personal speaking and sales and selling, learning how to count money and do all kinds of counting tasks and balances and budgets,” said Daugherty.
