The Black Student Union (BSU) is more than just a club. It’s a well known space where students come together to foster community and celebrate cultural heritage. This club has become a super important part of Independence High School with Ms. Moultrie being the head sponsor. It creates many friendships, opportunities and connections on campus.
Ms. Moultrie explained she wanted to start the club “ so students could have a safe place for their voices to be heard and included on campus because of the small percentage of Africans.” Ms. Moultrie said the favorite part about her job is, “when I introduce them to new info and they enjoy it. They will ask questions after we had a meeting and students have stayed after school to look into it.” Throughout the year, the BSU organizes events that both educate and entertain.
As this club is able to put many things together, some accomplishments were,” our first fall festival raised $200, and the biggest first event ever t-shirt sells.” Everyday out of the school year, Moultrie spends her time with BSU. Her easiest part of being the leader of BSU is how “easy the kids are willing to meet”. When BSU meets outside of school, they like to rebuild and are looking forward to doing jazz and the garden.”
Member of the BSU Club, Cayla Morgan says, “Moultrie makes school fun and easy for a club to be so safe.” Whether through mentorship programs, educational workshops, or simply providing a safe space to connect, the BSU Club likes to focus on the spirit of unity. “The BSU has given me a home away from home,” said Jaelynn Morgan.
As this club continues to grow at Independence High, they are assuring to welcome all students to join their journey of advocacy, celebration, and community-building.
