AI, which means Artificial Intelligence, has become a big part of people’s everyday life. It was created in the 1950’s. It is used in creating algorithms and even to generate questions, ideas, and answers to people’s jobs and problems, but how does that affect students and teachers alike, and how can it be used without it being cheating?
One questions that keeps arising is should AI be allowed in school. Taylor Babbit, math teacher at IHS, stated , “AI should be allowed in schools with clear guidelines. It can be a valuable resource for learning and efficiency, but students must use it ethically and in ways that support their education rather than replace critical thinking or effort”.
AI is built into almost all devices. According to Google AI is in 77% of all devices. Al can be used as a resource, but how does it affect teaching?
Babbit states, “AI helps me streamline administrative tasks, such as grading or lesson planning, so I can focus more on engaging with students. It also provides new ways to present material, like interactive tools or adaptive learning platforms, which help me differentiate instruction.”
It also affects students’ learning and how they perceive the course content. Senior Kaylani Almonte’s learning she stated, “It helps me understand things that I missed or didn’t understand.”
Maya Roberts also stated, “AI helps me with learning because it can summarize things or help explain things for me if I don’t understand the way my teacher explains it.”
AI can also make it easier to learn. Almonte states AI makes things “easier way easier”.
So does AI affect a student’s learning? According to Babbit “AI can help students by offering support tailored to their needs and expanding access to information. However, if overused or misused, it can make learning harder by reducing opportunities for critical thinking and problem-solving. Balance is key”.
So how can AI be used without it being “cheating”? Roberts states “I think AI should be used as a resource to summarize something or put it into words you can understand better.”
Overall students and teachers alike think AI should be allowed to help them learn and teach, so students can understand the resource with the help of AI.
