Many students struggle in school for many reasons, but there are also many ways and resources for students to get help when struggling in school.
For example, a study from Healthy Young Minds found that, “36% of students were an academic year behind their peers before the pandemic, that percentage has risen to almost 50%” (Healthy Young Minds).
There are many ways and reasons why students can be struggling in school. For example, counselor Sue Knapp stated that there can be many reasons, but the top 3 are:” illness, home life, and/or they just don’t try.. One of the main causes as well for students struggling in school is being absent. Counselor Sue Knapp also stated that just being “absent is a cause of students struggling.”
Furthermore, online school also caused an increase in struggling students. Counselor Lynette Cramer stated “ we’re still seeing effects from Covid year.” There are also many causes for students struggling in school. Counselor Lynette Cramer also stated that “not doing well the year before, what’s important to them could affect how they perform in school, or students might have difficulty understanding what school is teaching that helps with life after high school” could be some more causes to students struggling in school.
Although students might understand what they’re learning about in class, a lot of them still tend to get distracted at home which also causes them to struggle in school. Counselor Jennifer Reed stated that parents can help by “making sure they’re coming to school, making sure when their student gets home that they are doing their homework, or just checking their students’ grades.”
The best way for students to get help is to ask teachers or use the resources they have for them right away. Counselor Lynett Cramer stated that the best way is “intervening early before it’s too late.” Counselor Jennifer Reed stated, “getting a lot of information to see why students are struggling in school” is the best way to help struggling students.
