Golf is a sport at Independence that doesn’t seem to get as much attention or luster compared to many other sports. Nevertheless, golf can teach valuable lessons, get people engaged with friends and competitors, while also giving an opportunity for growth.
Golf is a difficult sport for many people and trying to just pick up and play isn’t viable for some people. Matthew Blankenship, golf sponsor, understands and believes the program is about teaching kids golf and not expecting immediate results.
In contrast to other sports, such as football or basketball, it is the first time playing golf for many high school students, making the guidance of Blankenship extremely valuable.
According to Blankenship, “Golf teaches you to know who you are and what you need to do to be successful.”
There are many reasons to join golf. Senior Elijah Aranda said, “It doesn’t matter if you’re good, trying your best is what counts.” It’s an opportunity to try something new and interesting.
Independence golf is open to all students from Freshman to seniors, boys and girls. They are always welcoming new participants, and it is strongly recommended by Blankenship.
The perception golf receives a substantial amount of the time is that it’s a rich kid sport. However, Junior Graeme Hollingsworth emphasized that “[It is] not a sport for rich, privileged kids. It’s a sport for everyone.”
Golf is a great way to learn life lessons, have a fun time, and get better at a sport with great coaching regardless of individual experience level.
Blankenship recommends coming to see him in order to learn more about golf.
