The girls basketball team at IHS has experienced a season filled with personal and collective achievements.
Mahawa Sheriff, a freshman, is a standout player who scored 20 points in multiple games, demonstrating her dedication. She attributes her success to her strong relationship with her teammates and the motivation she receives from her mother.
Heaven Walton, a senior, took pride in learning to shoot three-pointers, making her final year memorable. For both players, basketball has been more than just a sport it helped them self-improve and build friendship.
The team also had challenges along the way. Pressure and tough losses tested the players, but they learned to cope in different ways. Sheriff focused on rebuilding herself, while Waltono reminded herself that setbacks were temporary stating, “if it’s a tough loss there is another day to get that loss back”. Coach Millett also faced difficulties, particularly with a small roster, which required players to take on multiple roles. Through strategic adjustments and conditioning, the team adapted and learned to overcome.
Teamwork was a key factor in their season’s progress. Coach Millett emphasized the importance of positive relationships, addressing conflicts individually before bringing them to the team. One of her proudest moments was witnessing the entire team celebrate a freshman player making a free throw after struggling all season. The players built strong bonds, supporting each other on and off the court, which helped them perform better during games.
Looking ahead, the team remains committed to growth and improvement. Millett evaluates performance each season to refine practice plans and strengthen the team’s skills. With a solid foundation of teamwork and perseverance, the future looks bright for the girls’ basketball program, promising more achievements and unforgettable experiences in the seasons to come.
