Art Club is a relaxed and no-pressure place where students can explore their creative sides without the fear of judgement.
Sponsor Kerrianna Smith, Homecoming Chair and senior Beatrice Ricks, and the vice president and junior Grace Nguyen, are just a few of the people behind the workings of the Art Club. They were asked how they got involved with the Art Club, what their roles actually mean, and many more interesting questions, and about the new and cool projects that they’ll do for now and along down the road.
Smith was asked what made her want to start the art club, and her response was that she wanted a place where kids could be creative and enjoy themselves in art, even if they can’t fit the art class she teaches into their daily schedule.
Her passion for art was sparked by the comfort it gave her, allowing her to be comfortable and confident in. With her officers, they come up with the ideas for the next club meeting they have, creating surveys for the regular members to vote on which they like best, making it enjoyable for most.
When asked about what she looks for in someone to appoint to an officer position, Smith looks for them to be self motivated, organized, gets along with others, and is responsible. Her officers help her run the club. She says it’s not easy to run an art club, but with the help of her officers, it makes it easier. “They really do a lot of the labor, the work, but I wouldn’t say it’s easy.”
Her encouragement for creativity and participation in the club is that there is no pressure and when they come to the meeting, they enjoy what they’re doing. She says a lot of kids are wrapped up in their classes, that they won’t have time to actually enjoy art.
Ricks, the homecoming chair, was asked what sparked her interest to join the club, and her response was “I love art all around. No other clubs really interest me.” Adding off that, she was asked how she liked being in her position. She said she liked it for the time she was doing it, because she’s the Homecoming Chair.
Making sure all members feel included and “on track”, she makes sure that they know what they are doing.
Ricks hopes that in the future, the art club will do something “extravagant” and “get out of their comfort zone.”
Nguyen, the vice president, loves being an officer because “I get to see other people’s ideas from a different perspective.” When asked to describe the art club in three words, she described the club as “chill, active, and engaging.”
Coming up with ideas for the next club meeting, the officers come together and converse about things they’ve seen online or something that’s interesting to do. “It all depends on what the officers like.”
Being an officer allowed Nguyen to discover things about herself. She learned how to handle people and how to speak up for others. She adds, “I have a love for helping others and letting them be seen.”
Nguyen hopes that in the future the art club will continue on, even when she’s gone. She finishes with, “I hope that others will keep the art club going.”

I always wondered if Art Club was that fun until now. I see that this is more than a club; it’s a comfort zone for others.

I like art. I don’t go to art club, but I myself am in Ms. Smith’s daily schedule class. It is super fun. I got to learn stuff I never imagined myself capable of creating. I hope to do more art in my other years of high school.
