Chess club is an interesting club for anyone to join, even if they have no chess experience!
It has many benefits, such as getting scholarship money for college, getting out of one’s comfort zone, and meeting new people, not just from Independence but many other schools.
The club has just been a regular club for students, but IHS made the schools have chess tournaments where they can now compete against other schools. And hopefully, the chess club will continue next year, as it will have changed as all the seniors will have graduated.
On the other hand, the club wasn’t originally made by Mr. Bolton, the new chess coach, as it was passed down to him by the former chess coach. The club has been around for many years. Get involved in school activities—join chess!
Josh Westfall, class president of chess club, states, “By joining chess club, I have met new friends and grew a close bond with the teacher and the people I met through chess, as now we have now been friends for a long time. There is more than meets the eye about chess.” Chess club helps build skills like patience, fast thinking, and is also a good way to blow off some steam after school.
There is two seasons of chess, where one is team season, where they go to tournaments against other schools to compete and meet equals. Where club season is practicing and playing chess for fun or see it as a pre-season for the real deal team season.
Overall, the chess club is a good place to make new friends, learn new things, and challenge yourself whether you know how to play chess or not. Joining chess club is a good way to get involved in school activities, and everyone is welcome!
