The Independence High School girls basketball team had an impressive season this year, achieving major milestones, including winning the region championship and earning a spot in the playoffs. Under the leadership of Coach Matt Maragh, the team focused on teamwork, communication, and hard work throughout the season.
Season Goals and Achievements
Coach Maragh said he could see the team’s potential early in the season. “One of our goals was to win the region championship and make the playoffs,” he said. “And actually achieved both those goals.” The team’s dedication and determination helped them reach those milestones and build confidence as the season progressed.
Building Team Chemistry
For Coach Maragh, strong communication is one of the most important parts of being a successful team. He encourages players to support each other and work through mistakes together. “Turnovers happen in basketball,” Maragh explained. “The important thing is making sure teammates talk things out and stay together.” This focus on communication helped the players build stronger relationships and improve their chemistry on the court.
Practices and Preparation
During practice, the team works on playing hard, learning offensive and defensive plays, and improving their shooting skills. Coach Maragh believes that strong shooting can make a big difference during games. Players also review game footage using Hudl to analyze their performances and find areas for improvement. “We want them to see what they did well and also what they can improve,” Maragh said.
Leadership and Growth
Leadership is another key focus of the program. Coach Maragh looks for players who lead by example and give their best effort every game. “If you need to play hard, you need to be the one doing it,” he said. Throughout the season, several players showed major growth, including Hennessy Martinez, who often came off the bench and brought energy and momentum to the game.
Memorable Moments
One of Coach Maragh’s proudest moments this season was watching the team celebrate their region championship. “Seeing the joy on their faces after winning was special,” he said. Another highlight early in the season was when the team defeated Fairfax after losing to them the previous year, showing how much the team had improved.
Looking Ahead
Coach Maragh hopes the program will continue to grow and maintain its reputation as one of the hardest-working teams at Independence. With a strong junior varsity team finishing the season with a 15–3 record, the future looks promising for the program. He also reminds players that academics come first. “Make sure you are a student before an athlete,” he said. “Working hard in the classroom carries over to the court.”
For Coach Maragh, success goes beyond wins and losses. He hopes the lessons players learn through basketball, such as teamwork, flexibility, and dedication, will continue to help them succeed long after high school.
